The Department of Fair Trading audit revealed a dodgy circuit-breaker was behind many serious defects in solar panel installations in Sydney's north west.

Port Macquarie solar electrician Jamie Harrison says checks have been done on local installations by Essential Energy.

He says residents should not be alarmed.

"On the mid north coast we have Essential Energy.

"Part of their testing regime when they have to go out to every single installation and check the inverter was to check the DC Isolator.

"The DC isolator has been highlighted in Sydney as being an overwhelming issue that keeps coming back.

"But I am confident that Country Energy has inspected those as part of their regime."

Grocers Get Report Cards for Reusable Bags

School may be out for summer, but that's not stopping the Citizen Campaign for the Environment (CCE) from handing out their report cards.

The CCE, which has a Westchester branch, analyzed and evaluated reusable bag policies of ten separate grocery store chains in the county and presented the results of its research Tuesday morning at Stop & Shop on Westchester Avenue in White Plains, which received an A+.

Along with Stop & Shop and Walmart, other chains had their Westchester reusable bag policies evaluated in the Bring Your Own Bag (B.Y.O.B.) campaign, including: A&P, Deciccio's, Mrs. Green's, Pathmark, ShopRite, Stew Leonard's, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. (Full report card below)

On the lower end of the totem pole was Walmart, which was the only store in the report to receive a D. The group believes its findings will provide incentives for such stores to improve.

"The incentive is the grade," said CCE Executive Director Adrienne Esposito, who added that it also pays to be environmentally friendly. "Those plastic bags cost one-and-a-half cents per bag. Members of the CCE interviewed stores and talked to people at corporate headquarters as well as posing undercover as shoppers. Multiple stores for each chain were surveyed from Westchester.

Stores were graded on sale and promotion of reusable bags, signage posted outside and around the store, training of cashiers to remind customers, customer education and monetary incentives.

While a reduction of plastic bags may monetarily benefit stores in the long run, that is just icing on the cake for the CCE¡ªwhich is most concerned with the negative effects such bags have on the environment.

"Plastic bags pollute rivers, streams; stick to our trees and fences; and cover up our open spaces," said Wallach, who worried about the effect such bags have on the wildlife living at the Hudson River and the Long Island Sound.

"Plastic bags cannot be digested. They get trapped in the digestive tracts of animals causing suffocation and strangulation."

In January, Washington D.C. implemented a fee of five cents per every disposable bag used by shoppers. Additional fees may indeed discourage shoppers from using plastic bags, however, some admit that facts alone may not do the trick.

"I'm as guilty of it as anybody," said shopper Peter Cook, 44, of White Plains. "It's just a hard habit to break."

Solar on the water in Tulare?

Developers are getting creative in finding unique locations for erecting solar panels with fewer environmental conflicts.

Tulare Irrigation District (TID) is working with a Colorado solar company on a pilot project to lease a 15-acre recharge basin next to its new headquarters to install solar panels.

The panels would be anchored to the bottom of the pond, and the arrays would reach above the high water mark of the basin.

"The benefit could be more than extra income for the irrigation district," said Carmine Iadarola, principal with Solargen USA. The solar arrays would cover much of the surface of the basin and absorb the sun's light to "save around 75 acre-feet of water a year from reduced evaporation," Iadarola added.Iadarola said the project, going through the permitting process now, could generate two megawatts of power ¡ª enough to light up 1,000 homes once it is in place about a year from now.

Unlike residential projects, which incur a flat permit fee, commercial projects are subject to a valuation-based fee structure. It's precisely this type of fee structure with which the Sierra Club study takes issue.

"Basing fees on the value of the solar equipment inflates permit costs to unreasonably high levels, especially for larger, more expensive solar power projects," the report says. "To recover costs, therefore, permit fees should be based on specific review times and billable hourly rates and not on PV project valuations."

Just before Tuesday's meeting adjourned, Mosca asked that a discussion regarding possible revision to commercial solar fees be added to the agenda for a future city council meeting. The next meeting of the Sierra Madre City Council will take place on Tuesday, July 12, in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

"If there is one school in the world military children are attending that is dilapidated and undersized, that's wrong. Trips to the bottle bank will soon be only a memory for residents of the Derry City Council area.

That's because in future glass packaging such as bottles and jars can now be disposed of in Blue Bins following an upgrading of the processing plant by the council's recycling providers Glassdon Recycling.

The announcement was made by the Council last week ahead of Recycling Week 21 -27 June, in which the Council is reiterating its recycling message to the public.

Conor Canning explained that during Recycling Week (the Council will be actively encouraging the public to help reduce the amount of waste it sends to landfill and increase the amount of materials sent for recycling.

He said that by recycling not only are the public helping Council to reduce its waste management bill. It means there's less waste sent to landfill and a saving in natural resources, as well as a saving in energy and the creation of jobs.

Since its formation almost two decades ago, Toome-based company Glassdon has been at the forefront of developments in recyclin. Their latest expansion means that recycling glass is going to be much more convenient and economic for the ratepayers in Derry.

"We have a clean-up system which takes o the likes of shredded paper, fine dust, and bottle caps away from the glass, which leaves the glass clean enough to go into the glass sorting plant."

"A lot of industries that would traditionally have used raw materials - such as the paper industry, glass industry and even the metal industry - have shifted across to recycled. All of those businesses now operate using approximately 70 or 80 per cent recycled material.

"Paper mills in England would have huge railroad areas where the timber used to come in but they aren't used any more as they only use recycled paper. The newspaper you read is more than likely made from recycled newspapers, " he added.

'Recycle more'

Conor added that it's important that people recycle as much as they can.

"That's why we are trying to get as broad an inclusion in the co-mingle bin.Find everything you need to know about Cold Sore including causes, We see that as the most efficient way of driving this process, adding convenience for the public and producing costs savings for the Council.

"Glass is anything up to 80 percent recycled. Aluminum and steel cans are mostly recycled. plastic containers will contain 30 or 40 per cent recycled material, the rest virgin material.

"The likes of coloured bottles, such as bleach bottles, plastic bags, wheelie bins will contain substantial amounts of recycled material.

"There are a number of substantial benefits to recycling. It reduces demand on raw materials, like sand and limestone for glass, wood and trees for papers.

"Production from raw materials also takes a lot more energy, particularly glass. It takes a lot less energy to melt recycled glass than it does to melt the raw material so there is a carbon footprint benefit. Recycling glass therefore provides additional benefits in terms of reducing carbon emissions."

Stolen Car, Shoplifting, Domestic Assault and Broken Bottles

A 17-year-old Newport girl was arrested around 2:36 a.m. on Saturday for felony possession of a stolen vehicle, felony drug possession, and driving without a license.

Police saw the girl driving with no headlights on and pulled her over. She had a passenger in the car who was also underage, who was later released.

At first she told police she left her license at home, but later admitted to not having on at all. She said the car was her mother’s and she had taken it without permission while she was sleeping. They took the car to 7-Eleven to something to eat, she said.

She also admitted to taking three Vicodin pills from her mother before leaving. She was taken to the station and her mother arrived and confirmed the pills were hers.

Andrey Ivanov, 21, of 30 Bellevue Ave., Newport, and Rustom Ilmanov, 20, of the same address, were arrested around 11:21 p.m. on Friday for larceny shoplifting.

Nikita K. Wilcox, 19, of 20 Beacon Hill Road, Newport, was arrested around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday for disorderly conduct.

Police responded to a report of a group breaking glass bottles in the street. Officers detained five people, and two witnesses identified them as the group breaking the bottles.

Wilcox claimed primary responsibility for breaking the bottle in front of the witnesses house.

Of all the areas of our daily lives, few have so many myths about them as drinking.

Sadly, most of them are complete rubbish, such as my unshakeable conviction that I'm gorgeous after a few bourbons,From standard Cable Ties to advanced wire tires, but it's amazing how strongly they persist.

So I thought I'd explode a few myths, on the basis that I've told so may lies in my life as a journalist that I feel I must make some form of atonement.

1. Eating the tequila worm makes you cool.
I'm afraid not. There are several reasons this is untrue, but the basic one is this: tequila NEVER has a worm in it. Or a scorpion, spider, bug, beetle or any other creepy-crawly. The vaguely similar spirit mescal does, but even swallowing the worm from this does not make you cool. It makes you look like an idiot.

2. Beer makes you more attractive.
Sorry lads, this is even dumber than the first one. Beer goggles are a well-known phenomenon but they lie. And ladies, it pays to remember that the Adonis you are slavering over after a few too many pinot gris is probably the sort of bloke you'd cross the road to avoid sober.

3. Absinthe is hallucinogenic.

It does have minute traces of thujone, a psychoactive drug, but for it to have any effect you'd probably need to drink a couple of bottles of absinthe. And since absinthe is usually around 80 per cent alcohol, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you were seeing pink elephants after a bottles' worth.

4. If you drink beer you'll get fat.
Unless you're drinking beer in vast quantities, it is no more fattening than any other alcohol. A pint of Guinness has fewer calories than a pint of orange juice and the main reason you have a beer belly is that all that time you should be spending at the gym is being spent in the pub instead. Curbed dropped by the Poetry Foundation's open house in River North this weekend to check out the new building and hear a talk by architect John Ronan. The building has already gotten a good deal of praise, and it deserves it. It's a thoughtful,Full color plastic card printing and manufacturing services. thought-provoking structure that truly suits its function. Nothing about Ronan's building is quite as simple or straightforward as it seems at first glance. Approached from the west on Erie Street, or from the south on Dearborn, pedestrians might mistake it for a garage because of the dark screen, but an opening at the intersection reveals an inviting courtyard filled with young trees and moss that eventually leads to the building's entrance. The same is true of the building's main staircase, which takes a couple of turns before bringing you to your destination, and offers a resting place at the halfway point, where a seating area has been set up. Like a good poem, the building's meaning unfolds in stages, we were told.

The interior is similarly inviting, with great walls of glass that look out on the courtyard and the skyline above and soaring bookcases filled with poetry books. In his talk, Ronan spoke a lot about the materials in the building ¡ª concrete, glass, steel, and wood ¡ª and the painstaking process of selecting them. And it does an excellent job of creating a 'soft' barrier between public and private realms.


Ronan, it seems, thought of everything while planning this building. He put a heating system in the concrete of the courtyard to melt snow and to keep shovels from scratching up that pretty concrete. He made sure that the acoustics of the event space would enable poets to read their poetry without a microphone. But there is one area that might have gone overlooked.Save on hydraulic hose and fittings, At the corner of Dearborn and Superior, visitors have to step up a couple of shallow steps to enter the Poetry Foundation courtyard. Ronan spoke about the symbolism of stepping up into the space, and entering the realm of poetry. Most people entering the courtyard see the steps, but people exiting do not. Because the concrete used to pave the courtyard is nearly the same color as the sidewalk, it's pretty easy to miss. After helping an elderly man who had just taken a spill back to his feet, a Poetry Foundation worker had to spot up at the entryway to warn visitors (everyone, young and old, has tripped on those steps today, he told us). A stripe of paint might be in order.
 

We're also a little worried about the fate of that freshly-planted moss (not that it's for us to worry about). Millionaires At Play In Upstate New York

As I drive down the dirt road, the wilderness stretches out before me like a dreamscape ¨C shadowy and silent in the twilight. The five-hour drive from New York City has dulled my senses, but as my old car noisily announces its presence, I notice a dark form ambling along the road. I'm making a pilgrimage to the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York, bedding down in isolated wood cabins and rooting around in the forests. And that dark profile ahead is a black bear.

The great industrialists of the late-19th century ¨C the Vanderbilts, the Rockefellers and the Guggenheims ¨C set up camps here in the wilds,Save on hydraulic hose and fittings, around 40 in all,From standard Cable Ties to advanced wire tires,Choose from one of the major categories of Bedding, to while away long hot summers, hunting, fishing and entertaining guests. But they were no pioneers. Their homesteads were not the rough and ready lean-tos of the frontiersmen. Rather, they were enormous and ostentatiously indulgent estates,In addition to hydraulics fittings and Aion Kinah, usually built on a lakeside. The grand families may have used rustic materials, but they built boathouses and gazebos, caretakers' residences, carpentry and blacksmith shops, and even schools for the staff's children.

"The idea was to respect the wilderness landscape by using materials ¨C shingle, stone, wood ¨C that seem to grow out of this place," explains Steven Engelhart, executive director of Adirondack Architectural Heritage, a non-profit organisation that offers tours of the camps. "It was a statement about fitting in with nature. But it was all a conceit ¨C they took their staff and they weren't roughing it."

In fact, their lifestyles were bordering on the absurd, according to Gladys Montgomery, author of a new book on the great camps aptly entitled An Elegant Wilderness. She notes that at nearby Pine Tree Point, railway pioneer Frederick Vanderbilt hired artisans from Japan to create Japanese-style cabins and made serving maids wear kimonos. Camps commandeered French chefs from New York's best restaurants for the summer. And at Prospect Point, mining magnate Adolph Lewisohn would bring a valet, a stenographer, a chess partner and his own barber for the season.

Following the Great Depression and second world war, many of the camps fell into dereliction, however. As recently as 20 years ago, they were considered white elephants. But New York State's decision to burn Nehasane Camp after acquiring it in 1979 ¨C in keeping with their "forever wild" provision ¨C spurred a preservation movement that is thriving today. It now takes many forms, with individuals, associations of owners, universities and non-profit groups attempting to breathe new life into at least a dozen camps and restore a part of America's heritage.

On a bluff above a lake at the end of a two-mile dirt road, White Pine Camp is surrounded by water on three sides and towering pine trees on the fourth. The initial sense of isolation is overwhelming. So, too, is the romanticised forest life. Cabins painted green and black blend into the woods, their windows glow welcomingly as I arrive at dusk.

White Pine, in the northern Adirondacks, was commissioned by Archibald White, a New York banker, in 1907. It is the only privately owned camp open to the public ¨C you can stay there relatively affordably with a night starting at $155.

Its elements of modernist design ¨C such as the high slanted roofs and skylights ¨C are unique among the great camps, although it still has a faux rustic charm. My two-room cabin, complete with a small kitchen, has stone fireplaces filled with logs and a moose head straddled by antique fishing nets. Old wooden floors creak underfoot.

White Pine feels preserved in time, like an old English country hotel. There is no main lodge ¨C usually a great camps' centrepiece ¨C as it burned down in the 1930s. But in one impressive room ¨C which was used as the dining room in the retreat's heyday ¨C a vintage "Keep Coolidge" sign points to when White Pine was the 1926 summer White House of President Calvin Coolidge.

"He was a bit like Ronald Reagan ¨C he didn't work too hard," says co-owner Howard Kirschenbaum,Our Polymax RUBBER SHEET range includes all commercial and specialist who bought the camp with a group of investors in 1993 after it had changed hands numerous times and was falling to pieces. The new owners have gradually restored 20 buildings at a cost of almost $1m. Open to guests since 1995, it can accommodate 60 people in 13 lodges, including the cabins where the first lady and president stayed.

"There's something about the great camps that appeals to the American character," says Kirschenbaum. "It's a combination of back-to-nature and the simple life, and a fascination with the lifestyles of the rich and famous."

The region has long been an experiment in living with nature. The Adirondacks is historically the most important but least known park in the US. At 6m acres, it's the biggest in the lower 48 states ¨C larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier and Everglades national parks combined. It boasts 2,759 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers, streams and brooks, and more campsites than its 1 million annual campers could hope to visit.

Coins add up to real difference for MDA

Change can seem like a hassle when trying to keep track of piles of pennies and those small coins that slip between the cushions.Full color plastic card printing and manufacturing services.


But a six-day collection of loose change and odd bills resulted in thousands of dollars collected for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. On behalf of the Plano Firefighters Association, Jimmy Harris on Thursday presented MDA with a check worth $41,486.40.

Plano firefighters at each station spent the first week of June working in shifts for the annual Fill the Boot campaign. A 57-year tradition exists between the International Association of Fire Fighters and MDA to help find treatments for people with the neuromuscular disease that causes impaired mobility.we supply all kinds of oil painting reproduction,

MDA Executive Director Jacquelin Way accepted the donation at Station No. 1 and said Texas has the most generous residents when it comes to the Fill the Boot campaign. Because of the economy, MDA relies more on individual contributions.

"A lot of it is bragging rights," Harris said, referring to the end of the shifts when they would compare their bounty. "Firefighters like to be really competitive."

Firefighters are still trying to return a digital camera's memory card that was accidentally donated this month.

Promised solar panels for White House still absent

In October, the Obama administration announced plans to install solar panels on the White House roof by spring, returning the power of the sun to the pinnacle of prominence 30 years after Jimmy Carter's pioneering system was taken down.

Spring has come and gone, and the promised panels have yet to see the light of day.

Administration officials blame the complexities of the contracting process and say the solar project is still active. But they can't say when it'll be complete.

Environmental groups say the symbolism is telling - and disappointing.

"On we'll go," sighed Bill McKibben, founder of the climate activist group 350.org. "One more summer of beautiful, strong sunlight going to waste, just bouncing off the White House roof."

McKibben and other environmentalists say the failure to meet its own deadline reflects an administration that has been long on green rhetoric but sometimes disappointingly short on practical accomplishments.

In last fall's announcement, at a conference of government officials and environmental groups, Energy Secretary Steven Chu was specific.

"I'm pleased to announce that, by the end of this spring,we supply all kinds of oil painting reproduction, there will be solar panels and a solar hot water heater on the roof of the White House," he wrote that day on his department website.

Nancy Sutley, chair of the Council on Environmental Quality, added that by installing the system on the most famous roof in America, President Obama was "underscoring [his] commitment to lead and the promise and importance of renewable energy in the United States."

McKibben, who along with other environmentalists had met with White House officials to urge such an installation, was surprised and gratified by the announcement a mere two weeks later. But the missed deadline has left him downcast.

"Nine months is a pretty long time. You can have a baby in that time," he said. "On the list of things that get done, this isn't all that hard. It doesn't require SEAL Team 6. . . . You can just open the Yellow Pages and get page after page of solar installers."

Administration officials counter that the White House isn't just any old home.

"To be honest, I am not surprised," said Danny Kennedy, founder of Sungevity Systems of Oakland, Calif., who said the delay was likely due to the complexity of such a project at the White House. "They're trying to get it right on the most famous home in the world, and there'd be all sorts of heritage rules and red tape."

So when will the panels actually appear? The Energy Department says it's "on the path" to completing the project but says details and timing can be shared only "after the competitive procurement process is completed."

Officials maintain that climate issues and energy conservation have been a top priority under Obama. They point to higher gas-mileage standards, green-tech incentives, and presidential visits to wind turbine and electric-vehicle battery plants. But environmentalists look at Obama's plans to boost offshore oil drilling and the collapse of climate change legislation and say the administration's record is mixed.

Camden and its residents survey fires' wake, assess their next moves

Amid the vast field of rubble on Orchard Street in the heart of Camden, Elmer Walker walks into what used to be his backyard.

A small, charred grill is the only thing standing after a fire in an old tire warehouse swept through his neighborhood June 9.

Orchard Street is now a crime scene, and not even residents are allowed on their property until the fire marshal's investigation is complete.

The devastation and frustration in Walker's Gateway neighborhood are matched in two other sections of Camden also ravaged by spectacular fires this month. On June 11, a fire in a former garment factory spread to homes in Waterfront South, and last Sunday, a blaze at a former detergent factory ripped through East Camden. Arson has been identified as the cause of the Sunday blaze and is suspected in the other two fires.

For a city already dealing with poverty and blight, the fires have brought devastating new burdens, both emotional and financial. Twenty-three houses were destroyed or damaged. Ten of them were occupied.

Four city blocks are charred, with at least $1.8 million in damage. Dozens of fire victims are looking for temporary housing. Many homeowners lack insurance to rebuild, and the city has no money to demolish burned-out buildings.

The removal of debris must await completion of the investigation, which fire officials said could take months. Then, who pays for the cleanup costs in a city where government and residents are broke?

Each owner is legally responsible for property cleanup, which can cost more than $10,000 - half the value of many residents' homes.

If the owner disappears, leaving behind debris and unpaid taxes, the city can place a lien on the property, said Bill Quinn, a spokesman for the state Treasury Department. But that's not much of a threat in a city where more than 4,000 abandoned properties already have municipal liens,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, including some properties that are charred piles from fires years ago.

The city is taking over the effort to collect on those liens from a tax-collection firm, Xspand, previously owned by former Gov. Jim Florio. Xspand's five-year contract with the city will expire Thursday.

The city also recently started using the state Abandoned Properties Rehabilitation Act, which gives it power to hold special tax sales, accelerate foreclosure on tax liens, and use eminent domain to turn over properties to new owners who will rehabilitate them.

But it is unclear if the city intends to use the law on damaged and abandoned properties that are left near the Orchard Street fire scene or if it plans to use any previous demolition grants to clean up the site.

It recently applied for a $2 million loan from the DCA to demolish 115 other properties.

City officials refused to discuss their plans and referred all questions to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office, where spokesman Jason Laughlin said, "We don't have those answers."

It costs the city $13,000 to $23,000 to demolish and clean up a house, according to recent city demolition contracts.

Residents whose fire-damaged houses are still standing must make the tough decision whether to fix their homes or move.

"We haven't decided what to do," said Sandra Arroyo, whose Chestnut Street rowhouse lost its roof and suffered water damage to its second floor in the June 9 fire.

Arroyo,Largest Collection of billabong boardshorts, a Spanish teacher in Oaklyn and the mother of 3-year-old triplets, and her husband, Justo, have been taking turns going to the house to clean up the debris and salvage what they can.

"My father bought me this house for my wedding present. I'm attached to the house," she said.

But Arroyo said she feared the wall of the burned-out warehouse next door might fall on her house, which she has owned for 13 years.

"I'm not feeling safe here," she said. "I'm not bringing my kids in." She and her family are staying in Pennsauken with her mother.

Thomas Inge, who lives next door to the Arroyos, said his insurance had lapsed, so he must pay to repair his house,We processes for both low-risk and high risk merchant account. which sustained extensive water and smoke damage.

"The firefighters went through my front door and upstairs to fight the fire," said Inge, a resident since 1998. "They made a big mess, tore the ceiling up."

Inge is saving his receipts, hoping someone will be held accountable for the fires and he can be reimbursed for the cost of fixing his house.

Indeed they have piqued people's interest

The FIT is fixed for 25 years at the rate they are offering at the time of installation. The price of electricity you 'sell' back to the grid goes up with along with the general price for units of electricity.

'Previously, solar panels did nothing to improve the appeal of a property, but if you can prove your solar panels make a tax-free profit each year, I can see them attracting more than just the sandals brigade,' says Trevor Kent, former president of the National Association of Estate Agents.

Indeed they have piqued people's interest, and companies looking to cash in on the FIT scheme are offering free solar installation to your home. They receive the profit from the FIT while you get a healthy reduction in energy costs. But buying your own panels - even with a loan - makes better financial sense.

THE TWO TYPES OF SOLAR There are two types of domestic solar technology: Solar PV (Photovoltaic) This type generates electricity.

Solar Thermal This only heats water. At present, the solar tariffs only apply to solar PV systems, but there are plans to extend these to the simpler and cheaper solar thermal systems, which cost just Pounds 3,000-Pounds 5,000 each.

SOLAR AND YOUR HOME So is your home suitable? South-facing is ideal - you'll lose 15 per cent for east or west - as is a 25-45 degree pitched roof and around 30 sq m of roof space (all the energy figures quoted for systems here refer to 'ideal' homes). Shade from trees or buildings will reduce performance. Planning permission is not generally required as long as it doesn't protrude more than 200mm above the roof line. HOW ELECTRIC SYSTEMS WORK With solar PV systems, each panel houses a cell made from layers of semi-conducting material, usually silicon.

When light shines on the cell it creates an electric field. Choose between standard roof-mounted panels (the cheapest), built- in panels which sit flush within the roof, or solar tiles, which completely replace traditional tiling. Tiles are more expensive, but costs can be offset if your roof already needs replacing. Prices range from Pounds 4,500 to Pounds 8,000 per kWp installed.

With either system, a wire leads to a 'solar meter' in your loft which shows you how much money you've earned, then the electricity travels to your home electrical system, or back to the National Grid, where you can profit. Energy isn't usually stored or saved up for use later. If you don't use it, the energy is sold back to the National Grid. The money you get for this is - slightly - less than what you'll pay per unit on your bills, so if you've got solar, it pays to run high-drain appliances such as washing machines during the day, when your panels will be generating electricity.

HOW THERMAL SYSTEMS WORK Solar thermal systems employ a series of tubes filled with anti- freeze that are mounted behind glass on the roof. The sun heats the liquid, which is pumped through a coil inside your hot water tank generating temperatures up to 60 [degrees]C - perfect for showering. A two-panel system (4 sq m) should provide around 50-60 per cent of your hot water needs.

Although final details are still shaky and subject to change, the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has indicated that payments of Pounds 300 per system, and 8.5p per kWh of heat produced, could be o ered to people installing solar thermal heating at home.

You'll have to choose between 'flat plate' and 'evacuated-tube' systems. Evacuated tubes are more expensive but o er greater e ciency. Don't forget, you will still need a regular boiler to top up the hot water at night or on cloudy days.the Injection mold fast!

Willie was tall and large, but he was light as a feather on the dance floor. He always played Santa Claus at West Point. Once Hob and I went Christmas shopping there, and every time I turned around, Santa wanted to hug or kiss me. Well, my temper finally hit the boiling point, and he seemed to know what was coming. He backed off, laughed, and asked how my mom and uncle were doing. Then I realized who he was, and I really let loose on him ¡­ but in a nicer way.

When I finished the ninth grade, Springhill School closed. My tenth-grade year began at Eupora High. Most of us were not happy coming to Eupora, but we soon adjusted and made new friends. Looking back, I cannot remember anyone that I didn't love and respect. I think the Class of 1960 is one of the nicest classes to finish at EHS, and we had the BEST teachers.

Alternative energy options analysed

Considering that the monthly BVI Electricity Corporation bill now shows a 45 percent fuel surcharge and the cost of a barrel of crude oil remains in the $95 to $105 range, it would seem reasonable to consider the possibility of alternative sources of energy — specifically electrical energy.

Perhaps the greatest obstacle in the short term is the BVIEC itself. According to BVIEC General Manager Leroy Abraham, the corporation may take steps to make it possible for locally generated power to be fed back into the grid sometime in the next ten years. I suspect this translates into "Never! We are not interested."

There are a variety of possible alternative energy sources that are in some varying degrees practical. All involve a relatively high degree of technology, and all depend on careful operation and a reasonable degree of operational and maintenance care.

Solar energy is the current star of the alternative energy sources. It is used in the United Kingdom, where a system allows private individuals to generate power that can be fed back into the power grid for credit. According to the Beacon, this system is also in play in the United States Virgin Islands.

The solar panels are not especially new, and the technology is well known. But the system is illegal in this territory. It also requires a battery storage system, an automatic transfer switch (if used instead of a diesel generator as a back-up system), and an inverter to convert the stored energy from DC to AC. A recent installation in West End cost close to $16,000 for a moderate-sized residence. That system, however, is functional.

Currently, even with the high fuel surcharge, the economics may not be all that attractive.

Wind generation

The Beacon also reported that two wind turbines have been operating on Peter Island. This resort is noted for its high-tech responses to environmental problems. In fact, the management has won awards for its work in this area.

Energy from waste

May Adams Cornwall, the director of the USVI Waste Management Authority, is quoted as saying that various Caribbean jurisdictions are shifting their attention from incineration to energy from waste as a means of solid waste disposal.

However, Ms. Cornwall also indicates that the solid waste is converted to fuel pellets, which are burned. While this may not exactly be incineration as it is known in the VI, it still involves the burning of waste.

A 1987 analysis broke down the VI waste stream. Flammables made up 71 percent of the total: 33.5 percent paper (including corrugated); 6.3 percent plastic (PVC, HDPE); 22.This page list rubber hose products with details & specifications.2 percent wood (mostly construction material); 2.9 percent putrescibles (wet garbage); 4.8 percent textiles; and 1.3 percent yard waste (vegetable matter).

Nonflammables and other waste made up 29 percent of the total: 18.1 percent glass (mostly beer bottles); 8.6 percent metals (mainly aluminum and steel); and 2.3 percent other materials, for a total of 29 percent.

To implement the system described by Ms. Cornwall, it is obvious that the nonflammables would have to be removed — specifically the glass and aluminum. Realistically, this could only be done if an effective recycling system were to be implemented. To the best of my knowledge, the VI and the USVI are virtually the only territories in the Caribbean that have essentially no form of recycling. Green VI

The current Green VI initiative to recycle glass as tourist items is most certainly the right way to go, but the amount that can be recovered by this operation is minimal compared to the roughly 20 tons per day of waste glass that is generated.

The recent effort to collect and recycle glass behind the horse track failed when the government apparently neglected to assist the operators of the project in transporting the material to Puerto Rico.

In 1984, the BVI Recycling Committee proposed a deposit/return system for beer and liquor bottles. Systems such as this are used in (at least) Ontario, where up to 98 percent of the glass is recovered and recycled.The same Air purifier, cover removed. In the VI, the proposal was rejected by prominent politicians and businessmen who claimed the system was "half-baked" and that it would put local businesses at some sort of disadvantage.

Any system that handles solid waste is certain to be a high maintenance item. The current incinerator is a prime example of this fact. And, for a variety of reasons, Caribbean countries are notoriously bad at maintenance operations.

So, while Ms. Cornwall's statement may be correct, the success of such ventures would seem to be dependent on both a recycling system that has been repeatedly rejected (or failed) and a degree of operational expertise that is not evident.

Texas incinerator

Center, Texas is a small community that operates a Consumat CS-1600 incinerator with an attached waste heat boiler. This was the model for the VI incinerator. The steam from the boiler is sold to a local chicken processing operation for use in preparing the chicken carcasses. So the system can be made to work. But boilers in general and waste heat boilers in particular are fairly high-tech operations. They depend on a degree of operator skill that is the result of considerable training — usually from stationary engineers who are qualified only after formal training.

When the existing system was installed, energy from waste was considered. It was rejected on the basis that no other steam generation system existed on Tortola and that the level of technical skill was not likely to be found on the island. Unfortunately, the latter prediction proved true.

Boilers require a relatively pure source of water for use as feed-water. Desalinated water is not generally suitable because of the concentration of the residual salt (four to six parts per million) when the water is evaporated to produce steam. And the corrosive nature of saltwater, especially at elevated temperatures, is well known.

In addition, the exhaust gas from an incinerator contains both fly ash and corrosive materials such as sulfurous acid and hydrochloric acid. Both of these can be removed by scrubbing, but scrubbing cannot be applied ahead of a waste heat boiler.

And perhaps the worst problem is a difference in attitudes towards maintenance. Ms. Cornwall was consulted when the original Dillon report was being prepared. At the time, the USVI had nine sewage treatment plants of the activated sludge type. Eight of these plants were out of operation for maintenance reasons. Operation of plants

In any "production" operation (and I spent 15 years in plants of that nature), the plant management is linear and vertical. While it is usual to consider suggestions from the operators, the management of the operation is in no manner "collegiate" in nature. Operators are assigned their tasks and are expected to carry them out. Shift schedules are set by management and if they are inconvenient to the individual operator that is unfortunate.

In the Caribbean, for some reason, this system is less than acceptable. And the long-term results of any system other than the one used in the most developed countries becomes rapidly obvious.

So when considering any form of alternative energy source, it is necessary to seriously consider whether the "host" country or territory is capable of handling it. And to a great degree, this depends on the qualifications of the people who are going to operate and maintain the plant. The incinerator has operated over a period of some 17 years, but the current state of affairs is no positive recommendation for the new unit.

And, until Caribbean countries in general understand their technological limitations, the situation is not really going to change materially.

Bahrain protests flare after activists sentenced

Bahraini protesters poured back to the streets Wednesday after a security court sentenced eight Shiite activists to life in prison in the latest blow by the Western-backed kingdom to cripple the biggest Arab Spring opposition movement in the Gulf.

The fast and angry reaction to the verdicts — the most significant display of unrest in weeks — underscored the volatility in the island nation after four months of unrest and raised questions about whether any credible pro-reform leaders will heed calls by the Sunni monarchy to open talks next week.

In size, Bahrain is little more than a speck off the coast of Saudi Arabia. Security forces used tear gas to drive back hundreds of Shiite marchers trying to reach a central square in the capital Manama, which was once the hub of their protests for greater rights. Mushaima returned from self-exile in London earlier this year after Bahrain's leaders promised to erase old charges of opposing the state.

Pro-reform activist Ibrahim Sharif — the only Sunni among the suspects — received five years in prison, while other sentences ranged from two to 15 years. The sentences can be appealed.

Fourteen of the 21 convicted are in custody while the rest were sentenced in absentia by the security court, which uses military prosecutors and a military-civilian tribunal. Among the life sentences, however, all but one of the suspects was in Bahrain.

Sharif's wife, Farida Ghulam, said her husband cried out "Our people demand freedom" after the sentences were read.

Ghulam said al-Khawaja then shouted: "We will continue our struggle." His daughter, Zainab, was dragged from court by female guards after she yelled "Allahu akbar," or "God is great," said Ghulam.

The verdicts could also bring some direct diplomatic fallout. At least two of those sentenced to life also hold European passports: al-Khawaja, who is a Danish citizen, and Mohammed Habib al-Muqdad, who has Swedish citizenship.

The court has presided over a series of cases linked to the protests, including issuing two death sentences against men accused of killing police officers during the demonstrations. Earlier this month, it sentenced a 20-year-old woman to a year in prison for reading poetry critical of Bahrain's king.
