Then there’s the good stuff; original ideas, realistic scripts and dialogues, compelling storylines, great acting and best of all, a faith on the part of the program makers that the audience has a modicum of intelligence.

Havelock may allow chickens at school

City rules now prohibit barnyard animals within city limits.

“It’s very important for students to have real live specimens to work with in the classroom,” Kayla Harris, Havelock’s new agriculture education teacher, told commissioners Monday night. “We live in a world now where a lot of things are virtual, but in career and technical education, especially agriculture education, it’s important for those students to understand the life cycles of a chicken, or the life cycles of a cow — how they reproduce and how they produce more products for us to consume and to use on a daily basis.

“Our goal is to get our students ready for careers in agriculture and any other industry that they can enter. More and more jobs related to poultry production are coming to North Carolina.”

Harris pointed to the Sanderson Farms poultry production facility in Kinston.

“They are looking for skilled students to come and work in their companies, and I feel it’s our responsibility in Craven County and at Havelock High School to have our students ready to take over those careers,” she said. “There’s a huge opportunity for them to make great money, wonderful benefits and retirement packages.”

Harris proposed that the school be allowed to have 20 chickens, all hens and no roosters. Havelock Principal Jeff Murphy told commissioners that the school had a horticultural compound that would be modified to house the birds.

Cloud over future funding of solar power

They're one of the most recognisable symbols of climate-friendly lifestyles – rooftop solar electricity panels.

But the reality is the boom in solar photovoltaic (or PV) panels has come thanks in no small part to state and federal government subsidies.

And as solar panel prices come down and carbon prices approach, some serious policy questions are being asked

One key policy that's driven the boom is the state-based "feed-in tariff" that pays householders for unused clean energy their systems feed into the electricity grid.

Queensland's FiT is credited with creating jobs and for modest cuts in greenhouse gas emissions.

But now federal environment minister Greg Combet has said the tariffs are sometimes unfair and too costly, and he wants to discuss them with his state counterparts.

The federal government's proposed carbon price was "the most efficient, lowest cost way of reducing pollution", he told the National Press Club last week.

But it appears Mr Combet could have a fight on his hands to convince the Queensland government to scrap its scheme.

According to the Productivity Commission, in 2010 the various state government FiTs cost $96 million across Australia, with a $21 million share for Queensland.

The other main solar subsidy is the federal credit – part of the Renewable Energy Target legislation - which householders get to help pay the up-front cost of the panels.

The commission said if the policies were taken as a way of cutting carbon emissions (which isn't their sole purpose),then used cut pieces of Aion Kinah garden hose to get through the electric fence. then each tonne of carbon cut cost between $431 and $1043.

A local engineering firm used a federal grant to help complete a solar panel system that could save the business close to $1,000 a month in energy costs.

Springfield-based Wepuko Pahnke Engineering LLC, which manufactures pumps and presses, finished building a solar panel array of about 200 panels that could generate almost 56,700 kilowatts a year to power its operations on Urbana Road.

Last week, contractors "were here doing the final prep work for the system panels to track the usage of the electricity," said Kelly Eichelberger, Wepuko Pahnke office manager." The electrician was here and they were getting the actual final inspection.

Jobs was given away at birth, driven out of Apple in the mid-80s and struck with cancer when he finally had regained the top of the mountain. His resignation as CEO on Wednesday comes at the relatively young age of 55.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," he said in a brief letter announcing his resignation.

A source close to Jobs said he plans to be active in his new role as chairman of Apple’s board.

Jobs grew up with an adopted family in Silicon Valley, which was turning from orchards to homes for workers at Lockheed and other defense and technology companies.

Electronics friend Bill Fernandez introduced him to boy engineer Wozniak, and the two Steves began a friendship that eventually bred Apple Computer.

"Woz is a brilliant engineer, but he is not really an entrepreneur, and that’s where Jobs came in," remembers Fernandez, who was the first employee at Apple.

Wozniak said that his goal was only to design hardware and he had no interest in running Apple.

"Steve Jobs’ role was defined -- you’ve got to learn to be an executive in every division of the company so you can be the world’s most important person some day. That was his goal," recently joked Woz, who is still listed as an employee reporting directly to Jobs, even though he has not worked at Apple for years.

Jobs created Apple twice -- once when he founded it and the second time after a return credited with saving the company, which now vies with Exxon Mobil as the most valuable publicly traded corporation in the United States.

Steve Jobs announced this week that he won't be resuming his duties as Apple's chief executive, ending a remarkable run that transformed Apple from an also-ran computer maker into one of the most valuable publicly traded companies in the United States. He'll remain chairman of Apple's board, so it's too early to declare the Jobs era over. Yet it's a good time to reflect on Jobs' seemingly magic touch.

'The water just kept coming'

It was set up for residents of Noxen where the National Guard was available to help people evacuate because of flooding issues with Bowman's Creek, mostly with their basements.

No one, however, took advantage of the shelter, McHenry said.

He noted that in Susquehanna County a shelter was also set up at Great Bend Fire Hall to take in about 20 persons flooded out in a trailer park along Mountain Valley Road.

Back in Wyoming County, Chamberlain said that Routes 29, 87, Sugar Hollow Road, Keelersburg Road, Windy Valley Road and Stull Road were all closed Sunday and would be evaluated by road and bridge crews Monday.

A number of other roads were temporarily closed while utility crews addressed fallen trees or limbs.

Chamberlain said that at the roadside rest off Route 29 four people had to be rescued by water.If so, you may have a zentai .

The rate of Amarillo residents suffering from asthma has increased since 2007 and is twice that of Texas, according to a University of North Texas study.

"Amarillo is trending up, and the trend is outpacing the nation and state," said Matt Richardson, Amarillo's public health director. "We have a growing asthma problem in Amarillo."

The study, performed during summer 2010, surveyed 600 respondents and nearly 13 percent of respondents said they battle asthma. In contrast, the rate of Texas residents with asthma is 6.5 percent, according to 2009 figures, the most recent period of available state data.

Asthma causes to airways narrow and swell and make breathing difficult, according to the Mayo Clinic's website. The most common symptoms are coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath. Asthma can't be cured, but its symptoms can be controlled.

Richardson said there is little the health department can do to address the asthma problem.

"We don't have funding for chronic disease prevention," he said, adding that his department operates on a $2.3-million budget.

There are usually four factors that trigger asthma: genetics, allergies, respiratory infections or environmental factors, such as pollution, Richardson said. While conceding that the causes for Amarillo's cases need more research, the city's asthma problem appears to be mostly tied to genetics and allergies, he said.

She said they usually show symptoms during the spring or fall, when the allergen count is highest.

Nabarun Ghosh, a biology professor at West Texas A&M University, said Amarillo's high asthma rate is probably due to a combination of factors, including wind-driven pollen, crop farming and the worldwide increase in carbon dioxide emissions.

One type of mold considered a major trigger of asthma is alternaria, Ghosh said. The Texas Panhandle has a large farming community and a source of mold is dying crops, he said. "Of the mold growing on the surface of plants when dying off, 90 percent is alternaria," Ghosh said.

Since 2000, Ghosh has collected allergens and air particles by using a machine called the Burkard Spore Trap. The machine has a green fan-like blade and sits on WT's agriculture and natural sciences building.

Ghosh said his work has shown there has been an overall increase in molds the past few years. His data shows there were 800 to 900 alternaria per cubic meter Wednesday. On Aug. 15, 2008, the alternaria count was 500 to 600 per cubic meter.

"About three years ago, there were simple patches (of ragweed), not that continuous trail," Ghosh said. "Now it's continuous."

Strong winds carry pollens from border states, Ghosh said. Pollen from a species of highly allergenic conifer trees in Oklahoma have been found in the Panhandle, he said.

Ghosh said he's been working on projects to help asthma and frequent allergy sufferers.

Tower Hill hosts exhibit that celebrates 'Desert Treasures'

As summer tends toward fall, prickly agave and brilliant claret cup, hardy buckthorn and translucent fortnight lilies are blooming at Tower Hill Botanic Garden.

Wielding her paintbrush like a horticultural wand, artist Carol Amos has transplanted a hothouse of "Desert Treasures" from her Southwestern home to the cathedral-like Limonaia greenhouse in the Boylston botanical garden.

A transplant herself and current resident of Scottsdale, Ariz., and St. Louis, Mo., Amos is showing 23 gorgeous oil paintings in the inaugural exhibition in the spacious Limonaia, which was completed in November 2010.

"As a painter, I hope to capture the beauty of the every day world that people see in their own gardens," she said Monday while installing the show. "All I'm doing is conveying to viewers something I saw that's so beautiful that I want to share it with them."

Subtitled "New Paintings by Scottsdale Artist Carol Amos," the show opened Aug. 23 and runs through Oct. 1.

With its 36-foot-tall arched ceiling and large windows, the Limonaia resembles the interior of Spanish-style chapels found throughout the Southwest.

Viewing Amos' paintings, visitors can easily imagine they're looking out a chapel window and seeing yellow prickly pear or a white winged dove perched on a saguaro fruit.

Tower Hill Executive Director John W. Trexler said showing Amos' paintings in the Limonaia's inaugural exhibit was an inspired choice.

"I think the stateliness of the room complements Carol's beautiful art," he said.

Painting these Southwestern plants, Amos combines a botanist's anatomical knowledge with a home gardener's personal touch.

Rather than trying to illustrate a textbook, she's depicted on her canvases accurate, vividly colored portraits of plants and the critters that nibble their flowers and hide beneath their leaves.

Pausing before a painting of a tomato-red ocotillo, Amos pointed to her rendering of its oval leaves and spiny stalks.

"I like detail. I like all the little pieces like the spines and petals. I don't want them to be perfect, just real," she said.

Visitors will be able to compare Amos' remarkably detailed paintings with the genuine article when Tower Hill hosts the Fifth Annual Cactus and Succulent Show Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18, in the Milton Gallery and two classrooms.

Comprising 10 vendors, the cactus and succulent show runs on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.Polycore Floor tiles are manufactured as a single sheet,m. to 4 p.m.

Amos will be at Tower Hill Saturday, Sept. 17, to discuss her work prior to the evening reception. All her paintings are for sale.

Through mid-September, visitors will see a pair of very different and exciting exhibits at Tower Hill.

In an exhibit titled "Fear and Wonder," Sean James Harrington is showing throughout the grounds and gardens 24 intriguing sculptures made from recycled materials that reflect his interest in nature and mythology.

Gail Bachorik's fiber and fabric "Art Quilts," which runs through Sept. 4, suggest the lush tropical beauty of her home in Florida. Amos' paintings will move to the Milton Gallery on Sept. 4 when "Art Quilts" ends.

Amos described herself as a contemporary realist who aims to accurately depict her floral subjects while conveying their natural ambience.

Born in Lexington, Ky., she grew up in the Midwest where she began drawing and painting as a child. Canton Central School superintendent explains need for renovation project

Wellcall a viable option to rubber gloves

KUALA LUMPUR: With volatile rubber prices and the weakening US dollar, many companies in the rubber sector have seen lower profits since the beginning of last year. However, Wellcall Holdings Bhd, the largest exporter of industrial rubber hoses in Malaysia, is one of the few that bucked the trend with its latest quarterly report.

Wellcall posted a 38.34% year-on-year rise in net profit to RM4.86 million for 3QFY11 ended June 30 from RM3.51 million a year ago. Revenue increased by a larger margin of 50.8% to RM38.11 million from RM25.27 million previously. Basic earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter was 3.68 sen compared with 2.66 sen a year ago.

He added that the increase in raw material prices gave Wellcall room to raise selling prices.

“Wellcall actually favours the upward increase in raw material prices, but it has to be a gradual and not a drastic increase. Unlike rubber glove companies that cater for the mass market, Wellcall produces more for the niche markets, especially in the oil and gas (O&G) sector.

“Wellcall’s products are tailor-made and meant for the niche segment. So it is easier to pass cost increases to customers,” Chew said.
