One of the most impressive community gardens in town--begun last year in 2010--occupies the four-acre site of a former housing project, the former Wheat Street Apartments in the Old Fourth Ward. It's only two blocks from the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. The Wheat Street Apartments were recently demolished, although nothing has been done to create any new housing opportunities for the displaced families on the property.

Occupying the site, which is leased from the Wheat Street Baptist church,which applies to the first glass bottle only, the Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture provides high-quality produce to members of its CSA (Community-Sponsored Agriculture network), as well as to restaurants and grocery stores.

"In the traditional sense, we're not a community garden, we're a garden in the community," founder Rashad Nuri said. "In a community garden, individuals would have these plots. But what we have are groups of people who are growing this food and offering it to the community... We literally have chefs dancing when they see this food." Wheat Street is the fourth site developed for gardening since Truly Living Well started out six years ago with a site in Riverdale. Nuri and garden manager Eugene Cooke began by collecting compost in buckets wherever they could find it and building compost piles. At Wheat Street today, large compost piles steam with the decay of 500 pounds of food waste collected daily from the Atlanta Farmer's Market. "I don't even try to grow food," says Nuri. "I build soil. God grows the food... It's very simple, just compost, compost, compost, and food will grow."

Vast concrete floors, the only remnant of what was once housing for hundreds of people, are now covered with 54 two-foot-high wooden frames built by volunteers. "And through that process," Nuri adds, "all of that culminates in community-building, community development. Economic development. Providing jobs. Transforming people, transforming the society, transforming the land, the soil."

This may sound like a passive endeavor

My kids do not know this - though they may be starting to suspect as much - but I am not, for once, striving to make this summer the most fun summer of their lives.

I did not reach this conclusion overnight. It started a couple of months ago, when I read the much-talked-about Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. The Havertown Superfund Site: What's Next?

Haverford Township condemned the Swell Chewing Gum property by paying $1.26 Million. A real estate valuation of the property by the county considered the property was worth $4 to $5 million more which has caused Haverford to appeal that amount for less . . . with less than a certain outcome.

Neither EPA nor the PADEP has ever conducted a systematic search for this well. As a result, in order to obtain some modest form of indemnity from Pennsylvania for conditions at the site, which have not been remedied both Haverford and YMCA, must accept a statement of alleged fact which is unproven and is likely to prove to be untrue.

The wood treatment facility at the Superfund Site processed at least nine (9) different chemical formulations mixed with diesel oil from time to time and openly stored treated wood in stacks at the site to dry for at least 16 years. That part of the site has been thinly capped in the mid-1990's but could become exposed to the elements once again because there are contaminants in the soil and water beneath the cap.is the 'solar panel revolution' upon us? To date, the site has never been completely remedied: a failed remedy.

Rapidly growing individuals ¨C the young ¨C with rapidly dividing cells would have increased susceptibility to exposures of contaminants, however, all individuals, regardless of age, exposed to chemical contaminants for longer periods of time could be adversely affected by chemical contamination as a result of their own genetic tolerance. Chemical exposure doesn't improve health and safety.

A recreational building on the Superfund Site must be designed to remove chemical contaminants from the air, not venting it untreated into the surrounding ambient air, which would affect the community.

Sub-slab vapors from chemical contaminants shouldn't be vented from buildings directly into either the outside air or building atmosphere without first removing those contaminants which accumulate from soil vapors that are known to occur. Regular changes of activated carbon in an air filtration system incorporated into the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system would be one way to accomplish removal those contaminants and provide a healthful environment.

New Company Refills, Reuses Wine Bottles

And the environmental benefits of reuse are impressive, according to the company's statistics.

"Sixty percent of wine's carbon footprint comes just from making the bottle," he says. "We reduce [a company's glass manufacturing carbon footprint] by 95 percent."

It's not just the production of the bottles that uses resources and emits pollution – it's also the transportation of the heavy material. Bottles for California wines may travel from another state or Mexico or as far away as China, Dodd says.

Can Wine Bottle Renew compete with these manufacturers of new wine bottles? The company thinks so.

Not only are wineries interested in the green marketing edge that Renew bottles can bring, Dodd says, but the reused bottles are actually 10-40 percent cheaper than new bottles.

"It's a win-win. Our bottles are environmentally sound and economically sound," Dodd says.

Glass markets have not always been so amenable to bottle reuse. Back in the 1990s, a few companies attempted to get into the bottle washing business, but couldn't compete with the low price of virgin glass at the time. The companies eventually failed, facing other challenges like a lack of technology to de-label wine bottles – problems for which Wine Bottle Renew has found solutions, the company says.

To naysayers who question the cleanliness and safety of reused bottles, the company says its bottles are as clean as new ones, after going through a series of wash and rinse cycles for sterilization – a process approved by the California Department of Health Services.

In fact, Wine Bottle Renew says its bottles are cleaner than new, since their bottles are washed immediately before shipment to a winery. It is not uncommon for new wine bottles to be stored for a some time before shipment, collecting dirt and dust, Dodd says.

And it was actually a new, but dirty bottle contaminating his homemade wine that inspired home winemaker and company founder Bruce Stevens to look for other sources of wine bottles and research the European bottle washing and refilling system.

In its fourth month of business, Wine Bottle Renew has as many as 300,000 cases of bottles at their washing facility at any time, Dodd says. The company sells reused bottles to 100 wineries and only hopes to increase its customers in the coming months.
