Since HBO taught us how TV should be made, the medium has divided into two. On one side there’s the total shit that’s still being trotted out by the networks; filled with hackneyed characters, formulaic plotlines, endless chase scenes and flashbacks that patronise the audience by spoon-feeding them reminders of why something is relevant to the plot. Then there’s the good stuff; original ideas, realistic scripts and dialogues, compelling storylines, great acting and best of all, a faith on the part of the program makers that the audience has a modicum of intelligence.

It’s these iconic characters that secure the show’s place in entertainment history. It’s the characters that get us talking.

Yes, “Heart of Darkness” broke the mould, “Homicide – Life on the Streets” changed the way TV is made, “Six Feet Under” took us into a whole new terrain, “Breaking Bad” is proving to be a stylish, action-packed and thought provoking show of the highest order, and there is a shedload of other great shows in the canon of quality entertainment. But this isn’t an encyclopaedia, it’s a blog. So I’ve kept it down to three modern classics.

The first two categories are best goodie and best baddie. KUALA LUMPUR: With volatile rubber prices and the weakening US dollar, many companies in the rubber sector have seen lower profits since the beginning of last year. However, Wellcall Holdings Bhd, the largest exporter of industrial rubber hoses in Malaysia, is one of the few that bucked the trend with its latest quarterly report.

Wellcall posted a 38.34% year-on-year rise in net profit to RM4.86 million for 3QFY11 ended June 30 from RM3.51 million a year ago. Revenue increased by a larger margin of 50.8% to RM38.11 million from RM25.27 million previously. Basic earnings per share (EPS) for the quarter was 3.68 sen compared with 2.66 sen a year ago.

“The better quarterly results were also due to the improved utilisation of our production lines and the gradual increase in the selling price of our products,” Alex Chew, executive director of Wellcall, told The Edge Financial Daily in an interview.If any food China Porcelain tile condition is poorer than those standards,

He added that the increase in raw material prices gave Wellcall room to raise selling prices.

“Wellcall actually favours the upward increase in raw material prices, but it has to be a gradual and not a drastic increase. Like other manufacturers, Wellcall has been facing rising raw material costs, in particular synthetic rubber and standard Malaysian rubber (SMR). To counter the effects of rising raw material costs and the strengthening ringgit, Chew said that apart from pricing up its products, Wellcall has improved efficiency by transforming its manufacturing process.

Wellcall also has the flexibility to switch between natural and synthetic rubber, giving it room to minimise raw material costs, he said.

Wellcall’s products are sold to distributors and end customers in major application markets. These include the air and water hose, welding and gas, oil and fuel, automobile, ship building, and the food and beverage (F&B) markets.

Unlike rubber glove companies that cater for the mass market, Wellcall produces more for the niche markets, especially in the oil and gas (O&G) sector.

“Wellcall’s products are tailor-made and meant for the niche segment. So it is easier to pass cost increases to customers,” Chew said.

Moving Pictures is one of the best records of its genre including hit songs like "Red Barchetta," "Limelight," and "Tom Sawyer" as well as an overall concept to the record that makes the other songs more meaningful than the filler that is part of most other albums. The performance from the Canadian trio is absolutely fantastic if not historic. Nobody questions if Rush can play their instruments, but what's so absolutely fantastic about the Moving Pictures re-release is the fact that it comes with both a remastered Compact Disc of the record as well as a Blu-ray. A remastered CD of a record that I bought back in the day isn't going to get me to write a feature story about the album, but the additional Blu-ray is. This Blu-ray to me represents the way records should be sold today. There is a stereo mix, a 5.1 mix and a DTS Master Audio mix, much like you'd expect from a blockbuster Hollywood movie on Blu-ray. Uncompressed audio sounds much more like master tape than a lower resolution 16 bit Compact Disc and in casual comparisons between the CD and the Blu-ray - it's easy to hear that the Blu-ray is better sounding, more dynamic and more open.

Rush's Moving Pictures does do a few things wrong in that the packaging is in a traditional CD-style paper case, not in a Blue plastic box like you would expect from a Blu-ray disc. The navigation is a little tricky, especially if you are trying to get to the three HD music videos included on the disc. But for whatever the record does wrong - it does so many things right that you can finally see a path to why you'd buy your music back all over again.

Will studios embrace music on Blu-ray? Back catalog records are very profitable for a label to sell in new formats, especially ones like Blu-ray. When the music business was cranking north of 30 billion per year domestically - back catalog CD sales made up close to 80 percent of the overall sales.
