Canton Central School superintendent explains need for renovation project

CANTON — Canton Central School hosted the first in a series of public forums for about a dozen people Wednesday to make the case through photographs and words of its need for a capital project that would replace the heating system and that could redesign the middle school and build a bus garage, among other improvements.

There is no price tag yet because the scope remains undetermined. School officials want to flesh out the project for a public vote by January.

Although the economy is shaky and both government and taxpayers are pinched for money, Mr. Gregory said, the time may be optimal while state aid of nearly 90 percent is available.

A study has recommended removal of the steam plant and conversion to hot water for a cost of $3.5 million to $4 million.

“That to me is priority number one,” Mr. Gregory said. “It’s well nigh impossible to maintain in its current configuration.”

Environmental science teacher Thomas B. Van de Water asked about a biomass boiler, but Mr. Gregory said consultants did not think it would suit the building.

McKenney Middle School might be redesigned to eliminate its 40 open classrooms because noise is a problem and security is a concern.

“We can’t lock the classrooms,” Mr. Gregory said. “There are no doors to lock.”

Athletic fields need work.

“Drainage at a minimum must be addressed. We don’t meet the adequate range,” Mr. Gregory said. “We challenge someone to show us worse conditions in the north country.”

Testing the sprouts

FDA spokesman Douglas Karas said that for most foods, the FDA's motto is "You can't test your way to safety."

He pointed out that having the right practices up front to minimize or prevent contamination are "the best bet" compared to testing the finished product.you will need to get an offshore merchant account. That's because testing some of the finished product can give a grower a false sense of security about an entire batch if a piece or package tests negative.

Karas said that's why the FDA recommends testing the water that has flowed through the entire lot of sprouts because it's a good indicator of what's in the sprouts overall, not just in a select sample. In addition, that sort of testing provides results before the product is shipped out, which allows growers to dump out contaminated batches.

Another logistical fact is that testing the sprouts involves smashing them up to release the pathogens. Obviously, if growers were to test all of their finished sprouts, they'd have nothing to send to market.

Once the sprouts are in "market channels," such as at distribution centers, the USDA's Microbiological Data Program can test alfalfa and clover sprouts by using a system that involves putting the sprouts in a bag with broth and pummeling them. MDP's lead microbiologist Shanker Reddy told Food Safety News that if pathogens are present, the process releases them from the sprouts, and stringent tests can be used to detect and identify them.

The benefit of MDP's testing is that it can help keep contaminated products out of the marketplace -- a far better approach to food safety than trying to track down the source of an outbreak after contaminated sprouts, or other fresh produce -- have been bought and eaten.

As for whether consumers can protect themselves by washing the sprouts they bring them home, FDA researchers have found that if foodborne pathogens such as E. coli and Salmonella are on the finished sprouts, washing them only minimally decreases the amount of contamination.

Eating sprouts: yes or no?

According to the FDA, the United States has received no shipments of sprouts or sprout seeds from Germany and Spain since at least last October.

In response to the recent E. coli outbreak in Germany, the International Sprout Growers Association said in a June 11 press release that it wants to reassure consumers that it appears to be a localized event and one that isn't affecting consumers worldwide.

The association "highly recommends" that the investigations into finding the source of the outbreak continue.

"By so doing, we can all benefit and further the efforts to make sprouts and all other raw foods the safest they can be,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality," says the press release.

At the same time, the association recommends that consumers continue to enjoy what it describes as the "the great health benefits, variety and taste of sprouts."

It invites consumers to learn more about sprouts and their health benefits, as well as recipes featuring sprouts, by going to its website.

In the U.S., the FDA recommends that children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems not eat any kind of raw sprouts. Officials: Cooler temps caused chlorine leak

Colder-than-normal temperatures were to blame for a chemical leak at a sewage treatment plant early Wednesday morning.

As the temperatures dipped into the 40s, a regulator that controls the release of chlorine froze at the Kline-Banks-McAdoo Regional Sewer Authority plant in the McAdoo Industrial Park in Banks Township, according to Emory Toth, plant manager.

The incident made the regulator unable to close and caused a small vapor cloud of chlorine to be released, which triggered a smoke alarm to sound and summoned fire departments to the area around 5:30 a.m., Toth said.

Fire departments from Banks Township, McAdoo and West Hazleton responded, along with McAdoo Ambulance, Toth said, and Carbon County Emergency Management was notified.

Rick Sparks, Banks Townshio fire chief, said as soon as he drove up to the plant, he could see a red indicator light at the site signaling there was a leak.

Sparks said there was a 200-foot safety zone set up around the building. There was no wind or breeze so the vapor was confined to the interior and immediate outside of the building.

A strong odor of chlorine could be smelled within three feet of the plant, he said.

About 10 pounds of chlorine leaked and dissipated on its own into the atmosphere, Sparks said.is the 'solar panel revolution' upon us? He said though 10 pounds may seem like a small amount of chlorine, it could potentially be lethal if the proper precautions are not taken.

No injuries were reported.

He said crews believe the treatment plant's ventilation system was left on overnight and turned already cool outside air even colder as it was pulled into the concrete block plant that has concrete floors, causing the regulator to freeze.

Crews checked for leaks when the chlorine had dissipated and found none, Sparks said.

Crossbow, tools stolen from Crawford County camp

A burglar stole a crossbow and several tools from a camp house and garage in Steuben Township, Crawford County, state police said.

The items were taken from a Station Road property sometime between March 1 and Friday, state police at Corry said. They included a crossbow and scope, a chain saw, a circular saw, a reciprocating saw, a socket set and an electric impact wrench.
