Families celebrate at Covington fund raising picnic

At the 63rd annual Covington Twp. Volunteer Fire Company Picnic the theme was family, through and through.

Stephanie McGuire remembers going to the locally loved picnic when she was a little girl, a tradition she now shares with her 7-year-old daughter, Marin.

"I've been coming here since I was her age," Ms. McGuire, 35, said as she and Marin tossed a rings at empty glass bottles, shooting for the right to bring home a colorful,If so, you may have a kidney stone . over-stuffed prize animal.

Although the McGuires didn't win anything from the ring toss, Ms. McGuire said the picnic always provides a memorable time.

"It's good family entertainment," she said.

Some people have been coming to the picnic, held off Route 502, even longer than the McGuires.

Dorothy Stengline and her husband, Don, said the fire company's picnic had been a family tradition since they married about 40 years ago. Nowadays, the Stenglines skip the soaring rides and carnival games for sweet-sausage and peppers sandwiches and talking with friends.

"Right now it's the food," Mrs. Stengline said about what draws them back every year. "When our children were younger, it was the rides."

Parents with toddlers and strollers, groups of teenagers and older couples holding hands wandered in between the Ferris wheel, slow-moving merry-go-round, and food stands, ignoring the cloudy sky and soaking up the sites, sounds and smells of a summer carnival.

Amid the tantalizing scents of frying funnel cakes, sizzling sausages and savory soft pretzels, Brad Dwier of Scranton led around his 3-year-old daughter, Isabella, from game to game, looking to show her some real family time.

"That's why we're here, for Isabella to have fun,he led PayPal to open its platform to third party payment gateway developers." he said, after they played Water Gun Fun.

Evria Arce, 11, who was with the Dwiers, handed Isabella the large blue whale she'd won at the squirt gun game and the two ran off to the next game.

Family night allowed people to buy ride tickets for just $1.25, with $14 ride wristbands the rest of the weekend, with all proceeds going to the fire company.

On the schedule for the rest of the week is the firemen's parade at 7 p.m. today, with music by DJ Wade. Four Faces West will play Friday evening, and fireworks to wrap up the picnic Saturday night at around 10.

Warren Heil, the parade secretary, said the annual event is crucial for fire company funding.

"This is our one major fundraiser of the year, it brings in the majority of the funding per year." he said. "Come out and enjoy yourself, it's definitely a family affair - fun for all ages."

A simple, lonely beauty

Mark Beck's realistic paintings include land and seascapes, but he is best known for his simple and often isolated old houses. What are the top Cable Ties treatments? These moody, plain clapboard structures trigger inexplicable emotions.

"I think people can tell there are disturbances in my paintings, odd things that are going on," Beck said. "I like the fact that they are lonely, because that's exactly what I intend."

Beck's recent work will be featured at The Vault Gallery in Cambria, which has represented him since 1993. The artist will drive from his home in Albuquerque, N.M., for the event, and to revisit San Luis Obispo,Handmade Aion Kinah at museum quality, where he spent two decades.

Beck first came here to study agronomy at Cal Poly. But "I kept finding myself going to lifedrawing classes, art classes," he said, pursuing a love of drawing that began at age 10.

He moved to Portland, Maine, got his art degree, then returned to San Luis Obispo.

Gone are the days when Beck slept on a mattress in the living room of a Victorian house undergoing renovation, or lived in a chicken coop where he liked the light, or a converted tool shed where he traded art for rent.

"So I didn't have to get a job," he said with a laugh.

Another signature theme is a room bereft of furniture or containing only a bed or sofa.

"Sometimes it's hard for me to know exactly what a painting is about," he acknowledges. "Generally, what I do is I conceal specifics in the painting."

The sense of mystery and melancholy that prevails is reminiscent of Edward Hopper, one of his major influences.Detailed information on the causes of RUBBER SHEET, Although Beck wants his paintings to provide pleasure, and viewers often say that the sad little houses give them a sense of peace, he intends something deeper.GreenRay's hydraulic hose design uses a different energy storage approach,

He is concerned about the American Dream, the desire for a home and how few people achieve it. Beck keeps up with current affairs and politics, which obliquely find their way into his work.

"I make the paintings so I can express myself," he said, "but I don't want to be preachy."

From his early days as an artist in San Luis Obispo, he was drawn to the old commercial buildings downtown and the homes along Buchon Street. Struggling to make ends meet, he sold most of his paintings to business owners and proprietors. That was before he hit the big time. By 1990, his paintings brought $3,000 prices. They are now fetching five times that.

During his time on the Central Coast, Beck taught art to California Men's Colony inmates for four years, an experience he recalls as intense and enjoyable.

"It was a slice of our society that very few people get to see," he said. It was an eye-opener for him as well. "It made me think about a lot of grim realities, too."

His first show was at the University Union Gallery (then called Julian McPhee Gallery) on the Cal Poly campus, and, by 1990,A plastic card is a bottle created from glass. he had gallery representation in Laguna Beach.

Nine years ago, Beck moved to New Mexico to be near his parents and siblings, where he and his wife are raising their 6-year-old daughter. It was also a place to buy an affordable home.

Music on the Barge concerts relocate to pavilion

StructuPolycore zentai are manufactured as a single sheet, ral issues with the access ramp leading to the barge on Gull Lake have forced the Town of Gravenhurst to relocate the first two concerts of Music on the Barge to the Rotary pavilion in the park.
Sunday night's opening concert by the Muskoka Concert Band was played to a crowd of a few hundred within the park, which overlooks the Music on the Barge stage.

According to public works operations manager Geoff Carleton, the piles under the walkway ramp that leads equipment and performers to the barge stage have been sheared off by ice.

The town was first notified of the damage by a resident late last fall, but it was too late to correct the problem because the lake was starting to freeze over, according to Debbie Broderick, Gravenhurst's manager of community services.

Once the ice cleared, an engineer reviewed the structure and developed the specifications for repairs.
Quotations have been retained for the work and once the appropriate permits are in hand, a contractor will complete the work within eight days.buy landscape oil paintings online.we supply all kinds of oil painting reproduction, Approvals for the in-water works are required from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, as well as the Ministry of Natural Resources, Broderick said.

New piles must be secured 20 feet below the water to support the ramp walkway, Carleton explained.
Fred Schulz, producer of the popular music series that draws 2,000 to 3,000 people weekly, is looking forward to a speedy restoration.

"Regardless of the delays to make the necessary repairs to the barge, the shows must go on this season," he said. "If the barge is not available, arrangements will have to be made for portable staging in the park to allow the music series to continue for this season."

He said the first two concerts will be held in the Rotary picnic shelter in Gull Lake Rotary Park, with the rain-out location at Gravenhurst Opera House.Welcome to the official Facebook Page about Ripcurl.

"I know the Town of Gravenhurst is working very hard to expedite the work, so I'm hoping there's still a possibility we'll get on the barge sometime this summer," said Schulz.

He is awaiting word from town officials on the status of repairs before investigating other options for continuing the concert series.Use bluray burner to burn video to BD DVD on blu ray burner disc.

Design, Keyboard, and Call Quality

The Samsung Replenish, Sprint's first eco-friendly Android cell phone, is a relatively rare beast: a BlackBerry-like, slab-style Android phone with a physical keyboard. The world needs more of those, and the Replenish's green cred helps add to its attraction. But it's too sluggish, with short battery life and an awful low-res screen, and we just can't recommend it to anyone for those reasons.

The Replenish measures 4.8 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs 4.1 ounces. It's made entirely of plastic; I tested a black version, although you can also get one that has the lower keyboard portion in bright blue. Sprint is promising a pink version for June. While the phone itself doesn't feel cheap, the plastic 2.8-inch touch screen is awful. It's too small, it's unresponsive, and it's too dim, with flat colors. Worse, its 240-by-320-pixel (QVGA) resolution is cramped and tough to read. Small text always looks fuzzy. Four thin, plastic buttons sit in between the screen and the keyboard. These are tough to press and wobbled a bit in their perches when I tried.

OS, Apps, and Multimedia

The Replenish sports a sluggish 600 MHz Qualcomm MSM7627 CPU and runs Android 2.2 (Froyo); Samsung has not announced a date for an upgrade to Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). There's one MSM7627-based Android phone that feels speedy, the LG Optimus One, aka the LG Optimus S (Free, 4 stars) on Sprint. But otherwise it can be hard to work up a head of steam with this processor, and the Replenish fails to do so. Sprint ID lets you download custom app packs from Sprint, including a green themed one. But these tend to fill the phone menu and home screens with bloatware. Aside from that, you get all the usual Android 2.2 features, including a powerful browser, push e-mail, good Facebook and Twitter apps, and free GPS navigation.

But using this handset simply isn't satisfying. It's not just the fuzzy fonts; you can't fit much of a Web page on the screen at once, for example. Some apps are missing from Android Market, including most of our usual benchmarks, as they aren't compatible with the super-low-res screen. One loaded, but then crashed immediately. Portions of the menu system, such as Settings and Bluetooth, are difficult to use because you can only see a couple of options at a time on screen; get ready to scroll up and down often. Android just doesn't work on a 320-by-240 screen.

There's a standard-size 3.5mm headphone jack on top, and a microSD memory card slot underneath the battery cover. Samsung includes a 2GB card, and my 32GB SanDisk card worked fine. There's also 135MB of free internal storage. Music tracks sounded a little muffled through Samsung Modus HM6450 Bluetooth headphones ($99, 4 stars). The stock Android player displayed small album art thumbnails. Standalone videos only played back properly if they matched the Replenish's native screen resolution; otherwise, they either didn't show up in the gallery, or generated an error message if one did and I tapped on it.
