Villagers shine a light on solar power success
A SCHEME to make cheap solar electricity widely available to households in Tamworth has been hailed as a "terrific success".
Environmental groups Whittington and Fisherwick Environment Group (WFEG) and Low Carbon Lichfield (LoCaL) launched their Solar 500 initiative in Whittington at the Big Green Fair in mid-April.
Since then, over 60 roof surveys have been carried out and 20 households have already signed up to have solar panels installed on their roofs, most of them in Whittington.
After the initial promotion in Whittington the groups are now preparing to publicise the scheme across the whole of the Tamworth and Lichfield districts.
Lyndon Williams,Handmade oil paintings for sale at museum quality, from the first family in Whittington to have panels installed, said: "We are thrilled with our eight panel installation and are looking every day to see how much electricity they are producing its over 150 kilowatt hours after just over two weeks.

"At a conservative estimate we expect our total financial benefit to be nearly 800 in the coming year from the feed-in tariff and savings on our electricity bill, and to get our money back in just seven years."
This scheme and the plans for a solar energy co-operative will be discussed at an open meeting on the "Lichfield Solar Revolution" next Thursday (July 14) at 7.30pm in Wade Street Church Hall, Lichfield. Installers will attend to answer questions.
The groups say that, with generous Government incentives and prices tumbling, solar power provides a "great opportunity" with the prospect of a tax-free, inflation-proofed income guaranteed for 25 years.
After researching the solar electricity market and carefully vetting proposals from a range of installers the groups have obtained what they believe to be a market-leading discount offer from installers New World Solar which takes advantage of the combined buying power of the groups' members.
